Goodbye Rosa Parks

Rosa Parks died earlier this week. She was 92. She was arrested in 1955 after refusing to give up her bus seat to a white man in Montgomery, Alabamba. (all blacks were supposed to sit in the back of the bus and she sat in the front)

Many people supported her and participated in a 381-day boycott of the city’s bus system led by the Rev. Martin Luther King. I think that's really amazing. Thousands of people walking to work or school every day for almost a year. Some of them walked several miles a day to support equality for blacks.

I don't think there are many people like her around anymore. People who stood up for what they believed in and really changed society for the better.

Today's heros and heroines are NBA players or movie stars. It's a shame.

I think there are still many heros out there willing to give up or risk their freedom or life for a greater good. Unfortunately, we don't hear alot about these individuals as the media has choosen instead to hightlight sports and entertainment celebraties instead. I think about the women in middle east who operated underground schools so that their girls can still learn to read when it became illegal to educate girls.
There are lots of heros out there still and sometimes its just keeping our eyes open to them. And it doesn't have to be a huge impact upon changing all of society as Rosa Parks but on smaller scale of just one individual. This happens all the time, we just don't know it as every interaction we have can bring about change.

Well said. It doesn't take much to make a little difference in someone's life. It's just a matter of reaching out to someone when they look like they need some help. Or doing a spontaneous act of kindness for a friend or a stranger.

Unfortunately, here in Singapore people are too busy or caught up in their own worries (real and imagined) to notice anyone else. I don't know why some people here are so unfriendly or inconsiderate towards others.....
